Flowers Redux

Recently I was invited to play with some product from Auntie’s Beads. Don’t you love it when you get to play in someone else’s playbox?

My shopping list:

Spacers, 5mm Flat Bali, 4 Gram Bag

Artistic Wire Spool, 20 Gauge, Natural Colored Copper Wire

Chinese Crystal Barrel Bead Strand, 10x13mm, Dark Vintage Rose.

Designer Lampwork Rondelle Strand, Multi Stripe, 9 x 15mm

15-Sterling "S" Shaped Tubing

The results?

In this arrangement I used the Designer Lampwork Rondelle strand and the Artistic Wire. The rondelles come in a strand of 10, the colors lovely. The Artistic Wire is in packaging that is new for me. Comes in a wonderful and easy to use dispenser. The rest? Polymer clay and Estée Lauder blush!

I’ve had this idea to use “S” shaped sterling tube beads, here all the parts work nicely. The 20 gauge wire is the exact size for these “S” tubes, and the 5mm bali spacer keeps it all in place. The Chinese Crystal are excellent quality. Great refraction, crystal clear and sharp lines.

Auntie’s Beads is a pleasure to shop. And I thank them for the opportunity to see these items…up close and in my hands!!

In my determined quest to learn all there is re knitting, I found these small projects quite fun. Following a pattern is a bit of a chore. I have gathered yarns with no thought to what their final use is to be…in other words, I have a ‘stash’! Now, most (no, ALL) patterns state not only the fiber/yarn/specific brand to use, gauge and needle size are also written into a pattern. OH Dear. So rigid and confining.

I have found what I most enjoy are the ‘top-down’ patterns. Needles are selected based on the the desired resulting fabric with the yarn used. Then knitting is easy. With the opportunity to try on as the piece progresses. Quite enjoyable.

This shawl is mohair and just plain wonderful. Delightful for this transitional weather. So soft.

Flowers. I’ve been on a flower spree. The flower canes I’ve seen over the years are stunning. As much as I admire the process (I have made a few), others have perfected the art. I shy away from areas others do so very well.

These are made using polymer clay for the sepals and stems. The blooms? Tshirts!

The pebbles are also polymer clay. The stone effect comes from reducing canes to a tiny repeat.

Jacks-in-the-pulpit also hit my fancy. These are all clay!

The copper leafs are from Artbeads. They are Copper Ivy Leafy Prickly Pendants and are just lovely. I put groups of 3 on a length of 20g copper wire with a few twists for tendril effects.
I received the copper leafs as a promotional item from Artbeads and am quite pleased with the quality. I have a few additional leafs. Leave a comment and I’ll choose a reader to receive a small gift!!!

Ahh, it is spring. It is also Pesach (Passover). I have been cleaning and polishing. My studio got an overhaul and I found some canes of indeterminate age (10+ yrs). Between coats of polyurethane finish to the bath and kitchen floors I made pebbles.

Why rocks? They are mindless. Fun. And a versatile design element. Over the years I have seen many techniques for pebbles/stones. I decided to simply reduce old canes and the bars of mixed waste clay I have. And you see the results.

Don’t think I did not have myself in mind for the holiday season! Thinking spring I decided on a cotton lace beret and sweater. It is 50 and heavy rain!!! The beret is finished and I am very happy with it. Won’t be wearing it and am not finishing the sweater just yet. I’m working on a very white, very warm mohair shawl!

Have you noticed the occasional ‘art’ at Google? Pleasant little surprises are tucked about the web (Google is not the only practitioner). Twitter is doing some fun stuff (no, I don’t “twit”). Kitsch in my day was a pink telephone, or pompoms off a lamp. Today it seems to be the fluff found around the web. Good for a smile, sometimes a chuckle.

I’m Back

The recent silence in this corner of the blogosphere (yep, I looked it up. That’s a legitimate word.) is officially over.

At the end of some twists and turns I do believe I have emerged in fantastic liberation! I am having quite a time in understanding and relishing the relief and new-found freedom.

What, you ask, is she babbling about? Special needs children are time consuming, emotionally draining and wreck havoc. Mine is no longer my anchor.

I am free to create. I am back in my studio!
With my new found knitting skills my goal is to blend my knitting with beadwork and polymerclay work…I have some ideas.

I leave you with a question…has anyone sighted a crocus?

the Laser!

The laser printer I have found to be the cheapest and the most reliable for the baking parchment is again available cheap. At Buy.com the Samsung CLP-315 is now on sale for $141.99. This model is wireless and the price is about $50 more than the model that is not wireless.
My space is such that wireless is the only way I can manage efficiently.
I happen to use this printer for just about everything. Replacement cartridges are not cheap. The mileage is fantastic. When I do have to dig deep to buy ink, I know I will not have to do so for quite a while.

I have been quite happy with the Samsung CLP-315. I did ‘kill’ one. User abuse. So when these last went on sale in December I purchased another. The cost of the printer with the cartridge set (it comes with a full set of cartridges) just made sense!

Polymer wins again

I never did mention a recent submission to a Swarovski competition that actually won a prize! I feel especially honored after viewing the winners. And considering the fact the prize is given by Fire Mountain Gems and difficult to duplicate.
The name Trifecta came about with the help of my youngest. There are three hollow balls along with the three parts of the interactive sculpt. The scull, jaw and pedestal are not connected, therefore poseable. Often I’ll find a ball or two in the jaws, or the jaws off the pedestal. It is fun to play with. The textural effect is a nod to lichen.

70 skirts in a day!

I have an interesting job. I am paid by the city. My position is in a private school. My responsibility is to the city. The school benefits from the city placing a practitioner in their facility. Stage set.
The school is in the final weeks of preparation for the year’s musical production (every four years this is produced). The costumes have been cut. The pieces delivered by the parents to the school. Plastic bags everywhere. Yesterday an ancient sewing machine was delivered that has not been used in years. (It was not tested.) No one in the school knows how to sew.
The machine does not work. I took it apart. Cleaned and oiled. Still does not work. OK This morning I brought in my machine and sat and sewed 70+ skirts and started on the vests. Sweat shop.

I am now working on shawl clasps. Or what used to be called sweater guards. Finding the hardware is difficult, may have to fabricate it myself.

This wears like a cape. Is soft and has a gentle drape. For the security I want a little something to fasten when walking outdoors. I am so very pleased with my first attempt…errors and all.

I have started this twice and am happy to say I have figured out how to knit this! It is from Meg Swansen’s A Gathering of Lace. The shawl I selected as my first is really quite simple. It is one by Robert Powell called Rippling Rainbow. I am using a yarn I had on hand, no color changes as the one I am using is variegated. It may be a bit much. I am committed. The first picture is from two days ago. And the second, today.

Amazing.
I am considering destashing some of the supplies and materials I have for clay work. My thoughts are to fill priority mail boxes. Each box to contain books, tools, clay, powders, paints, stamps, etc. Those who are interested to pay for the postage. Why? I have picked up clay only once since last May. I have lost interest. Time to change focus. Please leave a comment if this seems to be the thing to do, if there is any interest.

In another direction…I never mentioned I have a piece in the current Bead Star! And it softly rustles just like the leaves it looks like. Great piece to wear.

Over the last couple of days the concept of time has been flitting around the edges of my conscious thought. I remember when my children were young and would say “I’m bored” or “there is nothing to do”. I am too removed from my own childhood to remember/recall such thoughts. I wonder if I had such moments, it was a different time

Today is Friday. What happened to the other days since the last Friday? In recent years there is so much to do, so many projects planned, so many people avoided…not enough time.

It is not just the responsibility of being an adult and parent that clogs the day. It is everything else. The more I learn, the more I want to know. The more I know the more I want to do. The more I want to do, the more time I need. The more time I need….oh please.

What is your day like? Here is mine: Up at 8am at work by 8:30am. Home by 4pm. Prepare supper and housework 4-6 (about). Turn on computer. And sit down in studio. Studio time (concentrated) for the next 5-7 hours, with family interruptions. And that is it.

Seems like I have plenty of time. Let’s examine ‘studio time’. I generally spend an hour or two in research and prep. Another hour may be spent with orders/clerical type work. Actual time left for creativity and doing? 3-4 hrs. And last night I redid everything I had done the previous two nights!

I need more time.

The days pass too quickly, and the weeks fly. The months and holidays are here and gone in a blink. And the years, the years are passing.
A year no longer seems a long time. 10 years a conceivable time. Even 50 years makes sense. Ahh, is this what is meant by understanding comes with age? Is this waxing melancholy???

2010 should bring you the time you need.

do you see what I see?

The final stimulus for my learning to knit was all the beautiful lace currently on the web and in publications. An innocent post over the summer led me to discover how much I did not know. I set out to learn to knit. Along the way I have knitted a sweater, two hats, a muffler, gloves, socks and a couple of scarves.
The very first piece I cast on 30 stitches and what was supposed to be an easy, straight knit became a growing knit. I bound off 90 stitches!
I now can recognize what stitches are on my needles!!! And that bit of lace? My very first! I am so happy!!
The yarn is delicious, 70% silk and 30% cashmere. I have just the single hank and plan on a thin length to wrap around my neck to feel that sinuous softness.
And, yes, I know there are two very obvious ‘unusual thread paths’ showing. Remember that stitcher who wove the names of the aristocracy into her fabric during the French Revolution? Bet her piece had some unusual paths!

wish lists

Do you fill in wish lists? I have one at Amazon that is just plain stupid (great word that). It is several pages long and Amazon keeps notifying me of the price changes. As if I could find the funds.
I don’t just wish. Unfortunately I buy.
Recently my ‘order shipped’ and I finally received Knit Kimono by Vicki Square that has been on the list since publication. It first caught my eye before I learned to knit. The designs begged for me to translate them to crochet. Then I learned to knit. There is not one pattern I do not want on my needles. These are wonderful for showing off knitting and stitch patterns. And easy to wear! My clothes must be comfortable and stylish (most everything I wear is an Eileen Fisher knit!), these are.
It is published by Interweave, the layout is comfortable. The book design familiar and clear. And now it is mine.

And have you seen? Sharilyn Miller has done her magic again. Contemporary Copper Jewelry is wire work with copper. The step-by-step basics for wire work are great. The photos are clear. I enjoyed her Bead on a Wire and honed my skills with this guidance. One design concept I am partial to are the fibulas. These are great and can be used is so many ways. I have fashioned one into a bracelet clasp!
I only wonder the need to repeat the info. Are not copper wire and silver wire shaped in the same manner with the same tools and movements? Nonetheless, I welcome the addition to my library. Check out p77, fabulous!

Yesterday’s post elicited an email from Maureen with a link to her instructions for printing directly to polymer clay. It is different than what I tried and looks like a fun alternative.

While there I visited her wallet tutorial which I found fascinating. A wonderful gift idea. The interior is fabric or paper and clear instructions for a hinge are provided. Templates and extensive directions!

borrowing techniques

Polymer clay is the most adaptive, permutable (to borrow a term) art material I have used. The substance is limited only by the user. Fascinating.
Last month I tried something. A super thin sheet of Ultra Light, a feat in itself, the material dislikes being rolled thin. Cured at relatively high temp for an hour. Result? A sheet resembling paper which I then ran thru my printer. It took about a week for the ink to dry to permanent status. I had some smudging, think I’ll decrease the ink saturation next.
These are WWI and WWII posters. Something about women and war and this time of year. I served 12 years in the Naval Reserve and was disappointed when my health made me no longer eligible even for the Reserves.
I do not usually agree with whatever military ‘thing’ is considered worth sacrificing lives for. In my capacity in the medical unit that is not an issue. I get to put on the bandaids.

I, for one, am very thankful there are men and women who enlist. If not for them we would be faced with a draft. I lived thru those years and they were horrid. I guess what I am trying to say, is remember our service men and women. They may have chosen to put themselves in harms ways. If they had not, it would be others who have no stomach for it against their will.

I digressed.

Borrowing Techniques

Polymer clay lends itself to just about any technique and process. Above I treated it like paper. In The Encyclopedia of Contemporary Jewelry Making Techniques Vanetta Seecharran hits briefly on: metal and wire; plastic and rubber; fabric, fibers, and leather; paper and pulp; wood; ceramic; glass; concrete; casting. There is a wonderful chapter on tools (I adore tools). And the art!

There is enough fodder here for the polymer clay artist to be very busy for a very long time. Every time I open this book I have an ‘eureka!” moment. And while I would not call it a true encyclopedia, it is as close as I would care to get for a while. Where ever would I find the time for even more info???

Most periodicals try to fill many shoes; technique, editorial, tips, resource, review, gallery, biography. One or two find a niche to fill, Ornament comes to mind. The competition seems to be coming from the digital arena. Print publications have rushed to snag that corner also. It is mind-boggling what is available on-line.
Most of each magazines content (those that have web sites) can now be purchased as downloads. (A couple of my fiber magazines offer a digital subscription!) But (yep, here it is!) have you visited any of the on-line suppliers lately?

I am going to address only a couple, and please do not think these are the only ones that provide these services. The list is a long one (and I’m lazy).
Fire Mountain Gems has project instructions on the site. A fantastic gallery for design ideas, a free catalog full of ideas, ongoing contests that are easy to enter! Designer profiles to read. Talk about getting published…try a contest.
Rings & Things has an eclectic feel, fun to visit. Also has contests, lots of design and instructions. The catalog is not quite as hefty as the FMG one, still a delight.
SoftFlex is a company most of us know for their beading wires. Like the others their web presence is strong, with tutorials, galleries and contests. Even stronger is their presentation at beading shows. I always make it a point to visit their display, the deep discounts on stones and supplies (at fantastic quality) must be seen.

I am a member of the blogging team of Artbeads.com. Artbeads seems to gone a step further in soliciting designers to feature their products. The program is a win/win. Designers have an opportunity to try a product they would not necessarily use for whatever reason (in my case it usually is cost). Artbeads has a showcase for a product they chose to feature.
This month Artbeads chose to feature cubic zirconia!!!

I’ve finished the scepter!

I took a picture of me in a mirror to give an idea of dimensions. The large ball at the top and the smaller one on the bottom are both hollow. This thing is not as heavy as it looks! I rolled a piece of thin poster board (tag as it is called in NY) and wrapped it with paper tape for an armature. The two colors are extruded strips, with a bit of curve. The gold beads nestle in the slight fold.
The tricky part was getting the three parts of the top to stay together. Part one, the hollow gold ball. Part two, the surround. Part three, the staff. In the end I used plumber’s putty and drilled thru all three parts to insert a support wire.
After a couple of days curing I drilled a hole and passed thru a wire to suspend the accent strands.
The scepter will fulfill its mission in the spring.

I understand what you're talking about (I'm a consumer too) but would love to hear more specifics if you're able to capture them. I know it's hard -- I love it when I see stuff that makes me gasp, get annoyed when it's trite and boring, but how to articulate what works for me? Hard! And of course what appeals to each of us is quite varied.

Okay. I’ll start with the first beading magazine I subscribed to, Bead & Button. (btw, all of this comment will relate to the last issue received) The cover shows good use of bugle beads which is nice to see. Bugles are a great components and good designs with these bits of glass tubes are rare. The sushi platter is fantastic. It is offered as a subscriber download, not a magazine feature (go figure). The reviews on p11 are for two books that have been out for quite some time, something more timely (and not already in my library) would have been more to my liking. I enjoyed the bead knitting. The rivolis seem more of the same (p23) to be found just about everywhere. The beaded dahlia is interesting and a good technique article for those who do not yet have the technique in their library. The chain maille article repeats common designs and opening and closing jump rings. The sculptural peyote bow on p46 is wonderful, but how many bows can one stitch or would one without giving credit to the author. The earrings on p51 are nice, nothing special. As with the cuff on p54. The netted bracelet on p58 is a common design I’ve seen in my browsing. The color choices here are great and festive. On p62 is metal clay. I have resisted the draw of the metal clays (not hard to do..can’t afford them!).
The turkish crochet is a technique I have seen before with finer designs. If this had been my first exposure to the technique I would not give it a second thought. I have seen examples I find more pleasing. P76 more gold and crystals. The polymer clay article is a clumsy, awkward piece. Fire Mountain’s ad is great as usual!

BeadStyle has a contest on the front page to win a kit for the featured necklace. The components are great. The necklace leaves me neutral. Artbeads.com ad on the inside cover is great. And I enjoy the atmosphere of the Jablonex ads. The coiled bead caps on p28 are very well done, the technique is in just about everyone of my wire books. The zipper hearts on p70 is really something out-of-the-ordinary. Another design by the same author on p74 is average wire wrap and left me wondering its inclusion.Wire mesh ribbon is used on p80. While the designs leave me cold, the explanations and tips are useful. There was little else to comment on in this issue.

Art Jewelry seems to be constantly changing. The News and Announcements always has something interesting for me. This time it was the reference to Arthur Smith’s work and the exhibit at the Brooklyn Museum. (click on the link, you can purchase a catalogue).
The business end of art is given room in the magazine (a plus). I enjoy this magazine. Many of the techniques I use with clay. Or translate them to base metals to use with clay. The lapidary articles may not be the most useful in terms of stone finishing (I do not plan on cutting and polishing stones) They do give me plenty of design ideas. Stone patterns and shapes. Did you know that the 5-minute epoxy many of have on hand is a resin? And can be used for resin designs before we decide to splurge on epoxy resins specifically formulated for artisan needs? Who’d a thought? Art Jewelry on p56! This is one magazine I still pour over.
Beadwork is a magazine that wows then gets you saying but… The designs are stunning, the elements repetitive. p40 is a hank of twisted charlottes with a bezeled drop. The designer of the year on p48, I found overdone. Designer of the year p52 is a simple right angle weave that is a first raw for many beaders (it was mine!). Yet another designer of the year on p57 and one more on p60. Maybe they are hedging their bets, one will be a hit? The article on David Chatt is interesting and I always enjoy seeing samples of his work.P68 has a cuff with a closure I have used and like and textured sequins I’ve not seen before (I like). The last few projects are a bit of a reach. Everything gets a fancy bezel today. Throw in a bit of crystal and it is a winner.
Interweave seems to be doing a bit of reorganization. They have discontinued one magazine and have a lot more online content. Possibly recognizing their own repetitiveness.

I stopped the Crafts Report. Last month I received a complimentary copy since FMG used some of my work in an ad. (inside back cover, thanks for asking). Why stop? The articles became repetitive. After a couple of years I found myself not even leafing thru. And seeing the magazine again, I have not changed my opinion. While I did enjoy the feature articles on the different artist groups, it was not enough to justify subscribing.
I have not renewed Step by Step Wire. Bead Unique is hit or miss. (I don’t have current issues to go thru page by page for you.)
So, you ask, what do I look for in a magazine. I want to see something fresh. I want the techniques to be ones that are not easily sourced. Designs should show alternatives. If jewelry, the pieces should be wearable (comfortable and nothing to snag).
Next I have a question. How are designers found? Seems some of the publications use the same designers over and over. Do publications encourage new designers? Looking at the guidelines for submissions many are overwhelmed. (me included!) What would happen if magazines actively recruited new ‘talent’? I’ve seen some delightful designs browsing the world in my comfortable chair.

Is it just me?

I subscribe to many bead, wire and art publications. I am also adding a year to my age, yearly.
In the last year I have not renewed my subscription to several. Reason? I find the styles to be either juvenile or garish. I can no longer find the understated elegance I enjoy. Ornament has stayed true. My other magazines feature designs that are ‘familiar’. I have seen them before. Either in total or in elements and the bits are reworked.
The proliferation of books, magazines, ezines, websites, blogs dvd’s (have I missed anything) have made every technique available to everyone. For that I am in awe and quite happy. This mass explosion in print and visual media seems to have exhausted the ‘acceptable’ designs for publication. I am ‘jaded’. And many times hesitate to share the work I complete. I am not mainstream by any means and do not have the grace to respond to comments well.
With the constant intrusion of the outside into our studios it becomes difficult to allow our voice to sing alone and true. We tend to look to trends and want to meet what others ‘want’.
Who decides trends and the season’s colors? Is it not the designers of an industry? What would happen if I closed my computer, closed the door to my studio (myself inside) and sat for a week or month? Designed what I wanted, in the colors I want? No magazines to ‘encourage’ a certain element. Just my own creativity?
I wish!
I often find myself spending hours just looking at and reading other’s art. Enjoyable, not very productive. If I find a design I like, I make it a point not to go in that direction. Why? Fear of copying and non-originality. Better not to have spent the time surfing and just work!

    The scepter I mentioned earlier. It is just about finished!

Prolific Interweave Press is at it again! I’ve received review copies and oh my!

I was not prepared to so thoroughly enjoy Cynthia Thornton’s writing. Her illustrations and prose are entertaining and fodder for the imagination. The materials include metal clay, wire, resin, polymer clay and mixed media. The ‘enchantments’ are not overly sugary, refreshing in fact.

Chain.

What can be done with chain that has not already been done? Ask Jane Dickerson. Simple, clean designs.

Some ideas for those chain bits sitting in my jewelry drawer I cannot just toss.

From Germany I finally received Bettina Welker’s book. I adore her work. Published as beadworx, Bettina pushes the envelop of polymer clay. Many of the techniques will be recognized, many not as they are original and published here for the first time. There are translations offered in English, Spanish and French.

I have the English translation and it is very well done. The translation is sent as a pdf to accompany the book in German.

It’s magic

After a trying week I decided to take a class.
Taking a class means more than learning the subject/skill being taught. It is an opportunity to get away from stressors and to meet new people with interests in kind.
Last Sunday I called and that same evening I went to a class at Brooklyn General. They offer many classes in fiber arts. I am learning to knit two socks at once.

This technique is called the ‘magic loop’ and this is the first pair of socks I have attempted. I was shopping for wool socks the other day, ahem, have you seen the prices?? These will have cost about $3 for the wool and the enjoyment of the process, priceless.

Least thoughts of clay neglect are being entertained:
I am working on a scepter for a special presentation. Here is a sneak peek at some of the components.

The staff part is over a paper armature wrapped with tape. The ball shape at the end is hollow and slipped over the end. That gold orb is also hollow and will be attached. I plan some leaf like-shaped appendages around the globe to make more scepter-like. Along the spirals of clay, nestled in the grooves will be 24k seed beads. The small ball is embellished with Swarovski’s. Embellishment of the gold orb and appendages will be substantial, just have not decided what yet.

Kool-Aid

Here are the pictures I promised. Kool-Aid overdyed wool.

Laceweight. That bubblegum pink wool in the bottom of the pic is how this skein started. I used 3 different flavors of Kool-aid for the rich purple and blues.

Laceweight. The lacy chartreuse in the background is how this skein began. What an improvement! Two flavors of Kool-Aid.

These were my first attempts. I had purchased quite a bit of this fingeringweight variegated yarn. When it arrived I did not care for how bland it looked, the balls with the bands are the original color. So I thought the Kool-Aid was worth a try. If it did not work, I was not loosing anything. Not only am I delighted with the colors, the process seems to have added some sheen to the fibers. I used varying combinations of four flavors.

For those who may ask, I tried this both on skeins and on balls. It works. The balls simply take longer to dry.

I am currently knitting a shawl in some of that bubblegum pink with a strand of cobweb mohair from ColourMart. The mohair being very fine and me not wanting to risk a tangled mess, I am going to do a Kool-Aid dye after the knitting.
I found the cheapest source of Kool-Aid to be Amazon (yup!).

My beautiful Moto Q was developing a few quirks. Since my contract was primed for renewal, both of the phones on the contract were also ready for upgrade.
Two requirements, a smart phone and tethering on one phone. Robust music capability on the second. The second was easy. The first, not so.
I work for a government agency and one of the perks is a discount (we must maintain a phone, so there is basis for the somewhat less than generous 10%). Along with the discount the provider does limit which phones are available.
The only phone meeting both tethering and ‘smart’ was the now infamous iPhone. I am now the owner of an iPhone. Tethering is not supported!!! (It is if you crack the silly thing.)
Yesterday, after spending 3 hours trying to create folders for pictures, I discovered the silly thing cannot even do that…no, there is no app for that. (And I do not really care for iTunes. I am a visual artist. Not a musician!)

A web search found CopyTransPhoto.
Elegant, intuitive, perfect.
I cannot praise this bit of software enough. And fault Cupertino for not including similar productivity natively. (Moto Q performed this task beautifully with pc interface! You would think an iPhone using Apple based (as opposed to Windows based) intelligence would handle graphics and graphic manipulation/storage with better sense.

Anyone looking for similar solutions may want to do so now. CopyTransPhoto is priced at $29.99. Sunday at FIT

Every year I see the ads for the Glass Art & Bead Festival in New York City. And every year I miss it. I live 20 minutes away.

Today I went.
This is the second bead show I have attended. The first was last spring in Santa Fe. Today’s event is smaller, more intimate. The location is wonderful…NYC’s Fashion Institute of Technology. When you finish the show there is still plenty to do in the vicinity to warrant the parking fee. (We went to Whole Foods)
First stop Soft Flex. They seem to have the deepest discounts at bead shows, and no disappointment today. I met Sara Hardin of Ask Sara fame. On her very good advice I picked up one of the smaller wigjigs.

I dragged my son along and he became enthralled with the work of Joan Miller and Penny Michelle

And seemingly sharing a space, MyElements by Yvonne. Vibrant color, fantastic playful designs. Mesmerizing. And the artist…what a fun personality!

I took the time to watch Andrew Thornton's table. I wanted to stop by and say hello. We have ‘met’ on the web, wanted the opportunity to say hi in person. I am so very happy I did. Andrew represents Green Girl Studios and, of course, Andrew Thornton! A very kind and talented young man. Andrew gifted me with some of the Green Girl Studios pewter. Never having used pewter before I am impressed with the quality and richness of design. (No, dear son, you may not have the mermaid…and put that skull back.)

Lisa Kan lured me with the fabulous richness spread across her table. I’ve been wanting some of the wire lace. Just last week while working on a design thought the wire lace would be just the thing. Lisa had a fine selection and I bought a fine selection.

A bead shopping spree is never complete without a bit o’sparkle.

K Gottfried Inc! Have you seen Swarovski’s fire opal? BTW I only looked at 10% of the Swarovski display. I was in enough trouble.

Buttons

Been MIA for a couple of weeks. For those who do not know, there are periods of time physically my bed is as far as I get.

I am the recipient of someone else’s liver. Now I am looking to replace the rest of me…any ideas?
Meanwhile…I have been focusing on fiber arts. I have some yarn I am not fond of…brown and beige and dull. Tried the KoolAid dye bath…WOW! I have some beautiful skeins. They are drying. I’ll post pics when they are dry and can be handled.

Over the summer I finished a sweater jacket and have tried several buttons on it. As all who sew, knit, crochet, or otherwise create clothing, know…the closure makes the piece.

I knew from the start I wanted polymer clay buttons. The material is lightweight and perfect for a crocheted and/or knitted garment. The question was design. Finally I hit on the perfect answer.

They complement the fabric perfectly.

Process? As follows:

Prepare buttons from scrap clay in size and shape desired. Cure.

Scan the fabric of the sweater.
Manipulate the scan in Photoshop.
Print onto baking parchment.
Transfer onto a mixture of translucent and white Sculpey III. Thinnest setting on pasta machine, to create a veneer.
Cut veneer to cover button and re-cure.
And the perfect button to match any fabric!

And to celebrate I am working on a collar design that has been sitting in my studio for 4 or 5 years. The first prototype looks good. Bones

I just received the go ahead from FMG to blog about my entry to the Swarovski contest. I was uncertain re the rules. After leaving you, dear reader, somewhat curious (I dare to hope…), I now post my entry and my process.

Those who have paid attention, ahem, know I have a passing interest in skeletons. Morbid? Maybe. A few years ago I had the fortune to meet a gentleman who had access to plenty of carcasses. All I had to do was clean the bones. (Now I must tell you this is not morbid in the least. Just immensely disgusting. He fished those bones out of a decomposing pit courtesy of a taxidermist.)

All this took place in camp. Not in my Brooklyn apartment…unimaginable.
What can be done with those cleaned remains, just dream!

With this one I took various colors of orange polymer clays, a bit of red. Mixed in embossing powders, mica powders and those sheets of gold. Applied to said skull. Then went to town with Swarovski flatbacks. The poor thing was missing some teeth and the ones she had were gray and cracked. Swarovski double cone implants took care of the missing teeth.

A veneer of acrylics (parchment, warm white and gel medium) and ground glass give brightness and sparkle to the rest.

I had plenty of color left to prepare a presentation stand. Texture is a favorite area of exploration, here and on the skull I used the idea of lichen and moss growth as a design element. What supports it all? A couple of cd discs and a paper tube armature.

Something was still lacking. I started casting about my studio for the right shape, form. Ahh… BlownPolymer baubles!
And the assemblage is complete.

In my little corner of the world I do business with a couple of ‘big companies’. All seem to have adopted contests as a way to highlight their products and give back to the community. I am fortunate to belong to Artbeads.com bloggers group. The talent I’ve seen is wonderful.
Rio Grand sponsors a yearly competition. The categories fall outside my areas.
Interweave has many in different fields throughout the year, big and small. Always something for everyone!
Fire Mountain Gems sent out notice today of the winners of their latest competition.

Olga Dillow created this bibstyle neck piece. And took the GOLD!!
73 ( more or less, I lost count) people walked off with prizes. With another 170+ as finalists! This is impressive…better than the Emmys. And this is just one of many contests FMG hosts throughout the year.

The deadline for the Swarovski Crystallized Elements just passed. I sent in a piece….

The tiny 2 & 3mm Swarovski rounds fascinate me. I have some in beautiful jonquil I received from Artbeads.com waiting patiently on my work table. The design is ready to execute. (I design in my head…go back and forth…noodle it out…and when it is ready just start!)

First I need to finish some dish cloths. Can’t find the stash I had. Must have lost them in my move. This is as close to critical as my creativity gets! I have no dish cloths!!

Seed Bead Compulsion

Several years ago I journeyed into the realm of seed beads. Thought they would nicely complement my polymer clay work.
Many days they (those little bits of glass with minuscule holes) overshadow the blocks of clay.
(Don’t even get me started with my current fascination with knitting lace…argh.)

What do you do when presented with someone else’s color choices?

That is a question I had in the back of my mind all summer. Just before leaving for camp in June I ordered two of the Trios color ways created by the Soft Flex Company. I cannot remember where I ordered them…I do remember the selection was few. I chose Tranquility (blues) and Harmony (yellows). I do not know why.

Both were a color challenge.
What I did…originally I had the thought to use the colors in links as I had done with a previous design. These colors did not quite fit in with my plans.
As I rummaged thru my beads I found my stash of netsuke. A frog on a bit of bamboo! The Harmony Trios held together, ahh. And there were those 1.5mm rubber rings from FMG. The combination mimics bamboo…no?

A few Swarovski buttons and a wonderful lampwork artbead from glass bead maker JoAnne Zekowski finished this fun, simple, with a bit of quirk piece.

Now on to the pesky blues…

The Tranquility Trios begged for polymer clay. I mixed colors to match the trios colors. Let it sit overnight and decided the colors were off…mixed again. Much better.
And then just played…
I called this Tranquility Kicked. Despite the size, it is very light. I used Sculpey Ultra Light for the pendant. Pendant is 2&1/2 x 1&1/2in. 26” necklace. There are more Swarovski crystals on the back of the pendant. (I got carried away.)
As I was working with these colors the song lyrics “If you knew Susie like I knew Susie, etc” kept running through my head. I present for Susie:
I adore this one. Wore on my first day back to work. Susie is still getting talked about!
19-21” necklace.

Tiny Swarovksi flatbacks and 3mm topaz bicones make these last two pieces sparkle.

I see on the Soft Flex site new Trios colors are planned for release. This is a fun way to expand color flexibility. Both colorways were not what I would choose and forced me to think outside my comfort zone.

Old Habits

Can’t control myself. As soon as I am home I head straight to Amazon…have a shortcut on my browser. Today goodies arrived.
Did you follow Maggie Maggio’s online color instructions? I tried. I have a binder filled with the downloads and it is on my to do list. I find using a lesson from the web a bit awkward….
Welllll…..not only is all that information here…..there is so much more. Lindly Haunani’s color sensibilities AND Maggie’s in one tome. I briefly paged thru (dear Cynthia Tinapple of PCD fame with her own fabulous color sense wrote the intro!)

My initial fear…a book on color would be full of illustrations and theory. Little applicable material. From my brief looksee that is certainly not so! Ladies you have hit just the right balance.
Tonight it is my reading material. And I am slipping it under my pillow…osmosis you know…..

Along with polymer clay, I find bead weaving supremely rewarding. The only stitch to frustrate me has been RAW (right angle weave). Marcia DeCoster has authored one of Lark’s Masterclass Books on the subject.
I have already picked a project that looks classy, flashy, and relatively easy to start. As with all of Lark’s publications the layout is great. Marcia DeCoster has produced a fine work that will allow me to finally conquer this weave!

Yes there is more. For another day. I am busy mixing clay to match the colors of SoftFlex Trios Tranquility!

Yellow!

Somewhere recently I have read that the ‘new’ color is yellow. Generic yellow.

Imagine my delight. I am fond of those tiny Swarovski rounds and use them frequently in my designs. I recently received a tiny package from Artbeads.com. Pure joy! And timely. 3mm Swarovski rounds in sunny Jonquil with a flashy AB finish.

I have plans for these precious beauties that are patiently waiting while I play with Soft Flex Trios!

We are home. The yard is weeded. Unpacked and studio is demanding attention.

Hope everyone’s summer has been safe and we all return to work and studios refreshed with wonderful new projects to share!

The contest results are in, the winning entries in many categories are surprising. This stunning piece of work was not chosen. I am featuring it here, I think it is fabulous.

"Denim Pearls" by Doris Schenck of Oviedo, Florida

Doris’ masterful artwork complements and accents the Muse piece. The craftsmanship is precise and exquisitely executed.

These two pieces took the Muse piece, a carved/etched custom donut from Lillypilly Designs, and created elegant, wearable pieces of art.
Bravo!

My own entry:

I entered a lariat and bracelet set. The display is 12 inches high (to give a sense of proportion). As with all lariats it can be worn in a variety of ways. I like it with the pearls in the middle of the strand wrapped to the front and the ends hanging to the front. In this manner it gives a bit of a choker effect with those lovely pearls and crystals lying about the hollow of my neck…quite glam!
The large round bead is about 2 inches and hollow polymer, one of my Blown Polymer line, light as a feather. It is inlaid with Swarovskis. And you may not be able to discern, the ropes have a spiral of Swarovski. Just enough to give it sparkle without that in-your-face CRYSTAL that seems to dominate currently.

This is the bracelet from the set that somehow did not make it to the gallery. I used the beads and ribbon included in the Muse II kit. The donut shapes I made from polymer clay to match the one in the kit (the Muse) which I used in the lariat.

knitting … HA!

I had in mind a simple pattern. Cast on several times and each time found each row to have varying amounts of stitches. Not at all what the pattern called for.
Decided I had better learn what a purl and yo meant. Went in search of an alternate pattern. Did not see anything I wanted to try. Cast on 60 stitches with lace weight on #7 needles. Four rows of straight knitting for a garter stitch start. Then knit one yo twice. Following row knit all the knit stitches letting the yo fall. Interesting. Did that for about 11 repeats. Felt I had a good handle on those stitches.
Time to try purl. Searched the web for a purl technique that made sense to me. Remember I am a crocheter since my teens (that is 5 decades Dad) and am used to holding my thread/yarn in my left hand for best tension. Found the ‘Norwegian’ purl. Yup…works for me and makes so much sense. I find purling this way easier that the knit stitch!
Added several sections of stockinet to the scarf. Oddly there are holes in the stockinet. I had decided unless I could determine a stitch is actually dropped…just go on. This project is to learn the mechanics of the stitch, not perfection.
Are you ready? Cast off…an even 100 stitches! (Looked back at those holes in the stockinet…actually increases!) Since I used such thin, fine yarn the irregularities are not really seen. And the piece does look lacy.

For an absolute novice I am pleased to have learned a couple of stitches, how to cast on (two needle) and how to cast off (I used a crochet hook).

I am now finishing a jacket I had put aside while waiting for the ‘BIG REVEAL’ of the Muse II.

My First Shawl

I’ve wanted a shawl forever, seems like. Shawls are a popular and stylish sweater/jacket alternative in my community. They also happen to be costly. In the last issue of Interweave’s Crochet the Raindrops Lace Shawl caught my eye and I finished it Friday. I used 8 1/4 skeins of Cervinia Calzetteria and about 50 gm of beads. I changed the front edging a bit, wanted it more substantial. The beads along the lower border add wonderful body and just the right amount of weight to give a bit of flair.
I wore this Saturday here in camp (we are still getting rain and cool weather – no summer!) AND I LOVE IT!!! It is a fabulous pattern, drapes well and the entire project cost me less than $10.

I think a scarf pin, long polymer taper, will add the finishing touch. Another project for when I return to my studio….

Life have been disorganized here on the mountain. We seem to have a group of six bears that have come to favor our kitchen leavings. I caught a picture of one of the younger ones. The big one that we see every night is fearless. Sits down in the middle of camp and makes himself right at home! The other night one of the men got a shotgun and shot them (rubber) to try and chase them off. Straight up a tree! Then I was walking past the kitchen and saw 2 more. We have some guys from the forestry department who have tried to keep the bears out of the area. Two traps were set…one bear caught and relocated. The other bears came and looked at the traps and were clearly not interested.
Meanwhile every time there is a bear in camp, panic…sheesh. I was asked what I would do if I came out and saw a bear…I answered “take a picture” then “invite him to tea”.

For those who are interested…This is a teen boys camp with several families on grounds. I am the medical provider. My son does the construction and maintenance. Keeps us off the streets in the summer!

That’s the extent of our excitement this summer. I am currently researching knitted lace. I am not a knitter. I plan on learning!

Earrings

Earrings are funny things. My mother did not have pierced ears, yet did not feel ‘dressed’ without a pair of earrings. I can imagine the discomfort for the sake of fashion!
I wanted my ears pierced forever…when I was in my late teens a physician friend of my uncle did the deed with a needle. I was the proud recipient of approved self-mutilation. Never had a problem. For many years I wore fabulous earrings, long ones, short ones, fat ones, etc. Now I have a tiny pair of gold and diamond continuous loops. Barely visible. Only take them out for MRI’s and surgery! I’ve worn them for 20+ years.
Why put this babble on my blog you ask.
Denise Peck, the editor of Step by Step Wire Jewelry has authored a new release on just earrings. I am amazed at the ingenuity of the connections and findings. While I may not make a single pair of earrings, the design possibilities presented are fine fodder!!
Take a look at ‘Pearl Nests’ on page 119, perfection! (yes, I read my books and magazines back to front) ‘Silver Wheels’ p48, so simple, yet a design element that would translate well to other pieces.
The opening chapters provide wonderful information. This is not a book that intimidates. The descriptions of tools and supplies is as ‘user friendly’ as I have seen. (For some reason I always forget the Sharpie…read the book!)

When I get back to my studio I may have to play with earrings. After all, when a project is finished I have all those orphan bits and pieces earrings would naturally result.

Polymer Fix

No, I haven’t my studio with me, nor a square of clay in sight. I do have plenty of orders strewn about the internet awaiting fulfillment. Imagine my joy when seeing an Amazon box recently. (Yes, mail does come up our mountain a couple of times a week.)

Angie Scarr of miniature fame has a new tome out Miniature Food Masterclass, Instructions for her bananas, leeks, cakes, veggies, fruits, tarts, berries…and so much more are clearly explained here.

I am not a miniaturist. I do see possibilities. Imagine one of my hollow lentils with a tableau of food. Or a scarf pin with a veggie theme. What about seed bead and cookies/tarts in a lush bracelet?

Oh the possibilities.

The man on the left (Yves) is in charge of the maintenance in camp. The gentleman in the center (Ron) is a darling man from the community who does general work around camp. My son is working maintenance this summer. I caught the guys during a break in the ‘barn’. The shed is an old converted barn and Yves has the dubious luxury of living quarters on top.

I caught 3 mice in my one room cabin last night. And the bear dragged trash alongside my dwelling last night. Busy night.

Think the cold will keep them quiet tonight?

Yarn Remnants

This top is from the yarn I had remaining after finishing the jacket in a previous posting.
The pattern, Cat’s Cradle Lace Topper, can be found in the January 2007 issue of Crochet! It was a bit confusing. The hook sizes were inconsistent in the instructions. I never could get the correct gauge. And the pattern missed a chain rep in an early round. After a couple of false starts, this is my result on a hanger.

The broomstick lace I’m currently working on is stunning. I am using a sock weight 4-ply yarn I ordered from Smiley’s. If you work with yarns and have not visited Smiley’s…oh my. Lowest prices around. Just use the link and go to their ‘internet yarn sale’, and listen to me in the background saying ‘told you so’.
While I am sharing fiber source secrets, another recent find is ColourMart. ColourMart sells fine yarns from European sources. This quote from their website states it best “the top online supplier of remainder luxury yarns, particularly cashmere and silk.... we source our yarns from the best Scottish and Italian mills”. And. again, the prices are unbelievable. I just ordered a lace weight mohair. Less than $20(total) for a cone ~3600yds. Can you imagine what I would have paid retail for the same amount in skeins, and add to that tax and postage!
I have my bank account primed for some silks….

This ‘n That

We’ve been at camp for the last two weeks. Upstate NY calls the buildings ‘bungalows’. Mine is more of a shack. Over the winter my one room cabin was raised about a foot. Last summer we had drainage problems (sewer pipes were higher than the building…!) With raising the building the steps to the entrance remained where they were, as did the pipe under the sink…both too short. Had to find stones to place at the doorway to get in. And put a bucket under the sink…ah forget that. Just use the bathtub for everything.

I have one 10’ square room to call my own for two months every year. We have the Catskill’s all around. Fresh air and, so far, plenty of rain. Freakish weather…hail storms, a two inch ice storm on Friday had me sitting on the side of the road!

This beautiful moth (I believe it is a wild silk moth) was sitting on the stairs to the dining room, 5” across. Pic taken with my cell phone.

I finished another crocheted item today. And started on a broomstick lace project. Something new for me. And quite confusing. Think I figured the stitch mechanics after pulling it out several times.
I entered Interweave’s Beadwork Pattern Play Challenge tonight. Have to admire Interweave, the challenges are fun, and simple to enter. Anyone else entering?

Muse for Beaders

~Scarlett Lanson~ of The Beader’s Muse in partnership with Artbeads.com and Rainbows of Light has developed a friendly competition for beader’s. I had reservations…not my colors, time an issue.
I contacted Scarlett and asked about delivery time.

The package arrived quick. I received an interesting assortment that did not fit what I had planned. Less than 2 weeks and I leave my studio for the summer. aargh. Stitched every night after work. And ripped it out every morning before work for one week.

A bit more info…the requirement is to use the MUSE. The MUSE is one

of the items in the package. It is a secret until the package is opened. And it remains a secret. Only to be revealed to the general public on Scarlett’s site when the judging is final!

Back to my saga. I finished today

. I closed my

studio this afternoon. I am allowed to show bits of what I created…just not the MUSE!

I have made this wonderful lariat that is long enough to also be worn wrapped as choker. Supple, the colors worked! and I incorporated a Blown Polymer piece! The hidden half has the MUSE…

Salacia, the wife of Neptune, wore these adornments. Without them her powers faded. I embody the lost gift of Neptune (Poseidon). Then my hunt began to find the remainder of the pieces to again make Salacia’s royal jewels whole. The magnificent gift from the ruler of the ancient Romans, Jupiter (aka Zeus), was destroyed by Hera (Juno) in one of her many fits of jealousy. I created a new one…shhh.

A confession…

I love to sew and crochet. When my children were small all their sweaters came from my hook. And my clothing from my basic Singer. With that simple Singer I made magic. Lined suits. Gowns for weddings (sewed for friends!). A yard of material yielded a smart little skirt with a snazzy pleated kick pleat in less than an hour.
Too busy nowadays with beads and clay!
Recently I picked up my hooks. Have to admit the idea of crochet lace has me enthralled!
In the Spring 2007 of Interweave Crochet is a design by Marty Miller, Spiderweb Cardigan. Not a true lace, more of an open weave. Delightful.
I used a worsted cotton yarn with great stitch definition and a soft hand. I modified the pattern only a bit. Added an additional pattern repeat for length and tapered the sleeves. I also reversed single crocheted the neck and cuff edge for the design element and the added strength/stability this stitch gives.
Now to finish my piece for the Use the Muse II and to send off my BEADSTAR 2009 piece.

And then I am off to the mountains with hook in tow…

After my recent success with Soft Flex Wire as a design element I just might try my hand. I do find their choice of color combinations a bit of a challenge…not what I would have put together on my own. I can always try in the privacy of my studio. And as so often happens…if I am not pleased…land fill.

We have the summer to play as the entry deadline is September 1.

Think I am becoming obsessed.
I have boxes and boxes of beautiful fresh water pearls I have bought over the years. Having eclectic tastes, I had trouble coming up with original designs using these wonderful mollusk irritants. I am delighted with one or three of these…

The lavender mink one has an experimental chain I made with wire. Surprisingly effective!
I wore the lariat today to test…comfortable and easy to forget (important wearability test points for me!).
These are part of my Blown Polymer line.

On one of the mail lists a designer posted looking for 30mm or larger pearls. Ahem…I suggested she try her hand at polymer. She asked if I would…who can ignore such a challenge!
I decided to go with the techniques used in my Blown Polymer line. I think I got it. Muted pearls, faint variegations, lovely sheen. And big.

The added bonus is these also happen

to be hollow!

I don’t have toddler’s

I needed a table for my living room. When I moved from Chicago to NY 10yrs ago many of my items did not make the trip. (Family packed for me…don’t ask.) Never replaced the end and sofa tables.
Today I was at the grocery. Amazing Savings is next door and I stopped by just to browse. (yep, I can do that and not walk out with the store.)

I saw and purchased this table and chairs set for children. As I said, my youngest is in his 20’s and 6’ 200+ lbs. This is not for him! The height of the table is wonderful. Most sofa tables are low. This one is taller, just right for my laptop.

And heavy. I cannot imagine using this with children the chairs are so heavy, if they fall over when children are playing near…injuries for certain.
For my purposes the weight of the chairs is just fine. I have one chair in my entry hallway, and another in a ‘featured’ corner to pull out as an occasional table. Or to put a large vase of fresh flowers. A wonderful find and a great bargain!

I’ve been waiting. I have a cheap vibratory case tumbler I use for polymer. I’ve wanted a Lortone for metals for ever. The suppliers I generally entrust with my large purchases did not carry the brand (yes, I know…Rio or Otto Frei…but shipping costs!). I wanted Artbeads or FMG…

Today in my email comes the FMG newsletter and there it is!

Russian Spiral aka net tube

I have played with Inkscape and find it is easier than Illustrator in some respects. (definitely cheaper! at free)
Here is a quick diagram of the weave I used for the necklace in my previous post.

The beading pattern is two 11°, one accent bead. For the portion with the Swarovski 5301’s, the Swarovski is where the step-up is made. This reinforces the crystal. I use nymo D doubled, a personal preference.

Completed Murano…

I’ve completed the design inspired by the Murano Bead from Artbeads.com.

It is opera length, 17 inches. I am delighted the way it hangs and how comfortable the piece is.
I’ve used what is called russian spiral stitch, also known as a modified circular or tube net stitch.

The sparkly portion has Swarovski 4mm 5301 in red topaz with dark amber drops and japanese 11°s.

It becomes an extremely flexible tube. For strength a length of beading wire has pulled the whole piece together.

I’ve downloaded and am in the process of learning a vector program. It promises to be a bit easier than Adobe’s Illustrator (so far it is!). As soon as this is mastered I will post the directions for the stitch I used. It is a wonderful stitch. If you have the White Russian beading book, instructions are there, albeit in Cyrillic.

I have always admired the glass work of the Murano artists and as a member of Artbeads.com Bloggers I received this absolutely breathtaking showstopper:
When viewing this online I had thought of pairings with polymer pieces. Wrong. The bead demands to be not only a focal piece…it must stand alone.

This is what is sitting in my studio this morning. I am not sure if the drop design works best for this bead or an inline design.

Recently I received a copy of Ancient Modern: Polymer Clay + Wire Jewelry by Ronna Sarvas Weltman.

Each of us has different criteria for a great book. Ronna makes this one work for me with her opening chapters. The information there is more than worth the purchase price. The projects are icing. After devouring every page I had fresh design ideas…Thank You Ronna!

Here are a few that are a direct result:

From my BlownPolymer line, those

bowl shaped beads are a result of Ancient Modern’s influence. On either end and between I have beaded beads. The beading wire is strung through extruded polymer tube beads.

The center round bead is substantial in size. About 1 1/2 inches. Hollow!

This one features a wonderful cone assortment under the ‘cap’. (Mycology influences.)

Definitive Definition: Artist

The shock of realization hit this morning when, yet again, I acquiesced to the societal need of showering. Five minutes after I should have clocked in I turned on the water…habitual tardiness. (Reuven, if you are reading this…do as I say, not as I do. Love, Mom ps. better yet…don’t read any further!) (Boss, if you are reading this…ummm, ah, well couldn’t find the car…or…)

Definition of an artist is an inner state. Not every artist is an acclaimed artist. Not every artist is recognized.

Here then are those clues to the true artist:

It’s been three days (or is it four) since showering/bathing. Finally you begrudge the time.

Sleep am. The alarm is set for two hours before leaving for work. Enough time to finish that item from last night. Research the thought not quite finished yesterday. Ahh, what about the new ‘something’ percolating around the edges of the mind, squeeze that in. Oops, forgot the coffee. Note to self…consider resetting the alarm to allow an extra 30 mins more in the am, late to work again.

Sleep pm. Goal: to be in bed by midnight. To be well-rested (with that AM alarm set for 6am) 11PM is optimal, just not realistic. OK. Trick self…projects that can be done while in bed at bedside…a lure that has developed permanence and a bit of dust. Reality check: 2am and another night that sleep will steal 4 hours from the day.

Food. Staples become fruit, vegetables and bread. No cooking needed. Can be eaten in the studio out of hand. Friends start cooking for you. Last they looked the fridge was full of creative supplies. One shelf for edibles…barely. They think you may have ‘food issues’.

While at work you are really in the studio. At the end of the work day, straight home. Errands? Avoided. Wait till the kids come home from college, errands will keep them busy!

   Housekeeping. Easy…hire someone!

    A special program is aired. It is on. It is inches from you. You forget to ‘look’.

Family is home. Holidays. Wonders if anything ‘special’ is planned. Hmm, maybe is the answer. You look up, 3am, the day, evening and night have passed blissfully in the studio. Guiltily loved ones are tucked in (mentally) on your way to catch a few of those demanding nods.

As artists we sacrifice everything for the sake of our art. When my children were small I sacrificed my art for them. I left an Art Major to pursue a Science Major with minors in English and Biology to assure work stability.
Today my art comes first.

Am I selfish? There is “Art is a jealous mistress.” It is a relationship to which I am committed, enslaved, resigned, addicted, devoted, empowered.
I couldn’t ask for more.

As you can see, I’ve changed the template for the blog. I lost a couple of widgets. One of them being the links to some of the wonderful places to visit I’ve found in my ether world travels. As I rediscover those gems, and find new ones, my list will grow. The best part is the bar across the top with links to posts that seem to get the most interest. Makes ‘em easier to find!

I am getting botox Thursday! The bad news is that the surgeon is not applying the venom to a visible site… how bizarre. And what a waste.

Anyone looking for website (or blog) behind-the-scenes excellence…I must recommend Pish Posh Design. Very easy to work with! They are a design studio that truly listens to your artistic views. The best part is the monthly plan for updates. Extremely reasonable. How does it work for me? Major updates I ask PishPosh to perform. Tweaks I manage on my own. E.g., this format change Roy uploaded the new template. I then went in and changed the colors and rearranged the widgets layout. I did lose a couple of items that I had to hand code and the margin numbers were off for some reason. I fiddled and voila…what you see!

The best part? If I really muck it up, Roy and Jennifer are there to put it right!

Jennifer Teichman was the one who designed the layout of my website. I has thought of neutral colors, she suggested the vibrant colors…and so right! I found the graphics, Jennifer adapted the art. Wonderful to work with.

The initial investment is worth every penny! Thank you Roy and Jennifer.

These are from a new line, Blown Polymer.
Hollow, and that is a quarter dwarfed in the center.

All polymer. The ribbon is also polymer! I am currently working on some ideas in gray. After a bit of settling into my new space, I am full of ideas. Cannot seem to work fast enough!

gifting doubles CONTEST!!!!

Did it again. Bought a duplicate of a book. This one is authored by Kristin Omdahl.

There are a couple of fabulous shawls I am itching to stitch. My summer months I crochet. They are spent in the mountains in very cramped quarters. I am on call 24/7 for the entire two months. Any handwork needs to be extremely portable…and for me crochet is the most portable and forgiving of all handwork.

Anyway..I’ve digressed yet again. I bought this book twice. (Yes, I have a couple of more duplicates sitting on my shelves…sigh.)
Rather than return this item, losing the postage twice in the process, I’d rather gift it!

Parchment Transfers

I received a wonderful email from Sandy that I am sharing with you.
Her results with the parchment paper transfers are exactly the same as the results I achieved.

Hi Valerie,

You are so kind to share the parchment paper transfer technique and sell the paper. I bought some paper from you a couple weeks ago and thought you might be interested in my experience with it. I tried it with by HP inkjet printer and was able to get 3 prints from one image, each being lighter of course. Once the sheet of images sat around for a week they did not transfer as brightly but still worked. The ink on the transfer is very easy to smear and gets onto other papers so they are not easily stored. I also have an HP color laser and that worked fantastic. I made some transfers to Premo clay and left them over night before baking and they got rather sticky on the surface and smeared easily. I had also stacked the clay transfers with index cards in between - not a good idea. I got perfect transfers to the paper but luckily the image on the clay was unharmed and not that much lighter. My final mishap was to bake a covered pen on accordion folded card stock (this was an image I had just transferred and it felt dry to the touch- I got some color transfer to the card stock during the baking. Again the piece looks fine, but I learned a lesson.

Again thank you so much for sharing. I have already impressed some of my clay friends with your technique and they will probably be buying paper from you too.

Don’t you just want to have a hissy fit ( or present the decision makers with the raspberry award) when a product you work with and rely on is discontinued?
Sure there are work-arounds and substitutes. Nothing ever seems to work just like the product that is no longer available.

Just happened to me. I found a short cut to extensive sanding a while back which relies on Liquid Softener for FIMO polymer clay. That is what the label reads. Manufactured by Eberhard Faber.
Ahh, you say. Try Sculpey diluents, or mineral oil. How about liquid clay.

Nope…not as effective. And just what do I use it for?
Know how there appears a gray bloom after sanding? And the only way to get rid of it is to sand with ever higher grits and then to buff, buff, buff?
I don’t.
I sand with 1000 (usually 800) as my finest grit. And yes you can still see the scratches. Put on a bit of Liquid Softener for FIMO polymer clay, leave it sit overnight…smooth, beautiful matte finish!

So you want a FIXATIVE

A n d . . . It MUST be a spray. Polymer compatible…impossible. Until now.

I have been sitting on this product for almost a year. I was desperately looking for something to cover the metallic leafing pens. Everything caused the leaf to smear. Or to prevent the smearing the process of applying the products I tried was time-consuming and painstakingly, excruciatingly slooooow.

Enter PYM II ……

I tested this with the Krylon pens on various polymer clays. The test pieces have been sitting on my work table for the last many months. The Gold, Silver and Copper cannot be scraped off with a finger nail. The finish is durable and is not, to date, interacting with the clays.

Things to keep in mind:
Use in a well-ventilated space…it does have an odor, it does dissipate quickly.
It takes 24-48 hours for the fixative to cure.
I tried both the pump spray and the aerosol spray. Both work fine. I found the aerosol easier to apply with less drops.

I am absolutely delighted with the product and the developer. He is available by phone and email. And more than receptive to adjusting his product to your needs! The product as sold gives a slightly higher sheen to your piece when applied to polymer. Requests for different finishes (matte, high sheen, gloss, etc) are possible.

And for all of you who have been questioning how to apply a fixative/sealer to your inkjet transfers using parchment paper… this is the answer! I tried and it works beautifully!

Classes at Bead Fest

After missing my first class, I was able to take the next two. I learned to rivet…what fun! And today I met a wonderful person. Early on in my blog I had a drawing for Kristal Wick’s fabulous fabric beads (see here). Today I was walking the bead show and talking to a vendor. Next to me a woman said hello as if she has known me for years. Then she turned to the vendor and introduced me as ‘the Bead Star’. I had to ask, who are you? Kristal Wick.

This evening I took her class. The woman is a fabulous teacher. Her manner and presence is special. Kristal’s teaching methods are excellent (as is evident in her book, even more so in person)! She is warm and welcoming.

Santa Fe

This is a small town. The areas I have seen are full of shops, many artists and rich in history.

In the evening around dinner time there is a pleasant and festive air of activity. Tourism appears to be a major factor for the economy. I met a ‘local’ today and while we were walking to the bead show she talked a bit about the economy. Artists have done very well here. Currently times are tight.

I think I helped! This is the first time I’ve been to a bead show and I must say…unbelievable! I have always wondered how designers can possibly afford the wonderful beads used in the designs. Come to a bead show! Prices are more than reasonable. Some vendors can only be found at a bead show, and those are the ones I found to have the best prices. That selection pictured are my purchases for a couple of hours of shopping. And I have my eye on a couple of more pieces…

I drive a ‘91 Ford. Two doors, one of which does not work. With steering my mechanic says to keep off the highway. What I am diving in New Mexico, courtesy of Interweave and Fire Mountain Gems, is a brand new (1900 miles) Crysler 300! ALL the bells and whistles. Sheesh, even has a power button that moves the brake and gas pedal! What will they think of next?

Bead Star's online charity auction is now live on eBay and runs through March 16th! Designers donated some of their prize-winning designs from Bead Star magazine, the first-ever beading publication comprised entirely of prize-winning projects designed by reader/contestants, for an auction to benefit the American Heart Association's women's heart-health initiative.

All auction items will be on display at Bead Fest Santa Fe, March 12-15, 2009 if you want to see them in person. While five of the designs will be available for bidding only during the silent auction at the show, there are 23 different designs from the magazine available for eBay bidding. Visit the Bead Star website for auction details on these gorgeous necklaces, bracelets, earrings, and even a ring from Bead Star 2008.

I Moved

And am unpacking. In two weeks a large seven room apartment with studio was packed! TWO weeks. We moved on the 4th. Tomorrow is the 11th and BEAD FEST Santa Fe! I get to escape my forest, or is it mountain, of boxes. I assure you the boxes will await my return.

The 11th came and went with me sitting in airports. I am still in an airport. It is 4am on the 12th. 4am my time. 2am local time. Which means I still have to wait another 6hrs for my flight. Weather delays. Should already be in my hotel in Santa Fe.

I am in Denver and the officer who just rode thru says there are about 6 (six!) passengers in the entire airport. And this place is huge. I am tired, hungry, old and just plain out of sorts!

The Rings & Things 2009 Your Designs Rock Contest deadline has been extended!

In the current economy who could not use some additions to their stash? What better way to accomplish that than to win a fun competition, get some great exposure AND use products from a very nice company?

Rings & Things was the first email company I found for beading supplies many years ago. They continue to carry some items I can find nowhere else. I shop at various online retailers. Rio and the amazing FMG also get a good bite of my yearly income. I have in the last year ‘found’ Artbeads, Empyrean, 501Beads, and a few others. Some carry vintage and very limited selections. Being small does not always mean expensive.

How to Pamper Oneself

I have been boxing my apartment for the last few weeks. Last week I took a moment to peruse Etsy. Nicole Campanella of Beadwright had a sale! And as with all who are attracted to bright shiny things…I just had to have some of the offerings!

Imagine my surprise to learn I was Nicole’s 500th customer (way to go Nicole!).

Downsizing

As many know, I have lost my apartment and must move. I live in the most expensive part of our country and rents have doubled since I came to Brooklyn. We are downsizing. I will no longer have a room to call a studio. Last week I started packing my studio and a large portion of it went into plastic bags never to see the light of day again.

One good thing I did discover… Pinnacle PCTV HD Pro Stick . With the era of digital TV and I like to catch the local news, I did not want to get a converter. I also have one of those old bulky TVs that does double as a VCR (I know, outdated) and DVD player. So I looked into this PCTV thingie, it was offered as a refurb and cheap. Tried it. And it is wonderful. I can now use my computer for everything! This little stick, the size of a usb flash drive, is the TV receiver and your computer monitor becomes a TV screen. The reception in my area is horrid. This doodad has better reception than anything I have tried over the years!

Anyone in the market for a 20” TV/VCR/DVD combo set?

I do lose the VCR player. Oh well. Guess I will have to do something with all those polymer clay videos I have!

Last fall the editor of Bead Star (Interweave) asked me for some photos. Not having any a photography session with a very talented local artist, MeganGreenleePhotography, was arranged. Over 600 times that camera put my image into pixels! There were more wasted electrons.....

I have been and will be a bit scarce. I am in the process of moving. I have a lot to move.

Inspiration

For the past week I have been stringing bead after bead. I am going to test wear two necklaces and a bracelet this weekend. I was inspired.

From where do you get your inspiration?
I finally finished a large and intricate beading piece last Sunday. I felt the weight lift and was free! I took Tuesday and Wednesday off work and took the time to design some new pieces.

My design process may begin with a color, or a shape. Or simply the flow of energy. The picture on the left is a crop of a pic I found in the web quite a while ago (I save pictures I find interesting) and happened across today. Look at the energy and color! (btw this is a painting completely engineered in PS!) One of the necklaces is a flowing stream of yellow/gold seed beads interspersed with grayish bubbles of glass, reminds me of a bubbling river stream.

The inspiration for another piece came from items at hand…lucite and semi precious cubes. A wonderful fall creation developed.

What inspires you? Can you save it, or do you need to work on it immediately? Are you consistent and disciplined? Or like me…all over the place?

All important facets we need to know about ourselves. The more you know you, the better you design!

ACEO craze

Today it seems every branch of art has found a way to adapt the diminutive size. The challenge is to squeeze desirable art onto a small canvas. I do work small...but what story do I have to tell at 3.5 x 2.5 inches?

What made me do it? The PCAGOE February challenge is "ACEO"!

Finding oneself

Remember when finding yourself meant figuring just who or what you are? Usually It was a parent talking about an older teen or young adult… “He/She just hasn’t found him/herself yet.” And once you passed 23 or 24 (for females, usually males had a bit more time … or forever!) the phrase was no longer appropriate. You either found yourself or you were certifiable.

Well…welcome to cyber space. Now you can find yourself all over again. I did. Just this morning as a matter of fact. My home page is set to Polymer Clay Daily. And there I was. Found myself.

Then I looked at my mail and followed a link. Found myself. Handed an award! By Nicole Campanella aka Beadwright.

New Design

Ahh….finally a new design.

It is very hard to come up with something truly new. When you think you have, you open a magazine, book or webpage and see your design in full-glorious color. With someone else's byline!

This lariat design I believe is something new. The concept of a lariat is not new. The method of construction is.

I always wear a new design to ‘test’ wear ability and strength of construction. Yesterday I wore this out to lunch at a friends home. The girls had to try on the piece. Slips on and off with ease. Construction is extremely secure…I am pleased.

I now have the neckpiece in several designs.

My greatest challenge is what to do with all the polymer clay pieces I make. I do so admire those artists who create delicate jewels from polymer. I do not. Therein lies the challenge. What do I do with these chunks of polymer clay? How do I dress the polymer pieces to become wearable, desirable art?

I’m working on it…

February!!

Ok, what is everyone concentrating on for February? Hearts? Inauguration? For me the 9th brings a minor holiday, the new year for trees, and since we seem to focus on food...fruit from trees. In particular the dried fruit and nuts I find so tasty!
Hmm...Washington and the cherry tree and it is February and it is President's day.

Can't say this rambling is sparking MY muse. But (there is always a but, however, whatever...) I have been playing with hearts which I abhor! And (guiltily) admit am finding fun. Albeit in a kitschy fashion. Stay tuned for some sneak peeks.

I am thrilled with the feedback on the baking parchment transfers. The reports seem to indicate that Canon inkjets are the most temperamental. If your printer is a Canon some adjustments in the process may need to happen. I am hearing that the print is transferring. However the transfer is not permanent. An additional step is needed to make the transfer permanent. A fixative or layer of liquid clay would be my first try.

Continue to share your results with me and each other. There is something about a perfect tiny image preserved in a piece of wearable art that is wonderful to behold. And to say you made it yourself...oh my...

O L D (really old) copy prints

RE old laser transfers. I was cleaning out some stuff and rediscovered some Staples color copies I had made a couple of years ago (at least 4).
These are copier color onto plain paper.
I am fairly certain they will transfer onto liquid Kato. BUT not wanting to bother with a heat process.

I mixed liquid polymer medium (Pebeo brand) with a bit of white acrylic (so I do not have to worry about the color of the base clay and can use junk!).
Then applied two rather thick coats to the image side of the paper.
Allowed to dry.
Apply water liberally.
Rub off.

This first picture is of a couple of sheets that have gone thru the above steps! The second is of a focal bead with one of those transfers wrapped around a core of Fimo and cured at 275F for 40min. Yes, withstands the heat just fine.

Perfect transfers that I can use to wrap around clay bases.

Any acrylic polymer medium can be used. Even acrylic paints. If using paints, I would use a better brand such as Liquitex. The better quality paints are more elastic and will respond better to the abuse in this method!

What to choose. All or concentrate on one or two?

Twitter seems suited for those who are mobile phone addicts. I signed up and my cell phone was inundated with text messages until I figured out how to stop ‘em! Interesting.

I’ve been asked so many times if I have a facebook account, I finally looked at it this week. Also very busy. Seems a bit more user friendly. You can link your blog and Flicker accounts. Nice. Puts everything in one location. I have created what facebook calls a ‘page’. It is a cleaner look. However it seems you cannot invite friends as with the standard format. I am still trying to figure this out!

What do you use? Or are you one of the sane ones and don’t!

Baking Parchment transfer…inkjet

There has been some discussion and some trials with baking parchment transfers after my recent posts. I have had stunning success with my lasers…Brother B&W and Samsung color.

Initially I had also tried inkjet and as I had reported the method does work with inkjet, just not as vividly.

Today at work I printed onto baking parchment with a common HP color inkjet. (Mine at home is an Epson with Claria inks—water proof. The HP inks are not water proof and I wanted to test!)

Here are my results:

These two are onto gray classic Fimo. That is a dime in the corner. So what you are seeing is detail you may not see without the camera. To the naked eye these appear smoother.

These next two are on white Kato. This was ONE print. With the inkjet not all of the ink releases from the paper. I was able to get TWO transfers from one print! (Remember the dime!)

These are on Premo Pearl. Very hard to photograph. Very good transfers. That second one is again a second transfer from a print.

This last one is on SculpeyIII the whitest of all clays and it shows!

Just like the laser transfers all I did was to make a copy onto BAKING PARCHMENT (brand of choice BAK-O-MATIC by Dixie).

Place print onto sheet of raw clay (no water, no medium, no liquid clay).

Burnish (no need to burnish vigorously, seems to transfer rather quickly)

Lift paper off.

Cure.

And that is it.

I posted this picture to illustrate a current discussion on one of the forums. Seems to have generated some interest!
I received a request for a tutorial...so....here is a simple explanation of a simple process.

Roll a flat sheet of clay (any brand) around a dowel. Then roll it in salt. Press firmly. You want deep impressions. Cure. Rinse off salt and let dry. Using gold acrylic paint and your fingers, force the paint into all those crevessas. Immediately remove paint from surface of clay tube.
Now using various acrylic colors dab onto surface. Let dry. Slice.
Cut circles of clay to match the size of the end of your bead. Attach with liquid clay and smooth with fingers. Smoothing action will dome the cap.
Cure again.

For this look table salt must be used. It is square in shape and the gold paint gets in there and reflects nicely. Other salts do not all have the same cube shape. Kosher salt is flakes. Sea salts vary. Rock salt is too large.

For the last two days I have been transferring images onto clay. I have an Epson with Claria inks, a Samsung color laser, a Brother b&w laser, and an old (very old) Canon toner copier.
The Canon is great for plain paper black transfers that you rub on and leave sit for 15 min to 3 days depending on the effect you want and the brand of clay. No water, alcohol, etc.
The lasers are good for plain paper, apply to clay, spray with water, rub paper off. I find this tiresome. It does give an excellent and cheap transfer.
I read about transfers with freezer paper. I tried. Since the side you print onto (the waxed side) is so very slippery...the ink beads and the transfer is not clear. Not my choice!
Next...I thought what about the boxes of baking parchment I have squirreled away under the sofa? It is also coated, not quite as slippery as the freezer paper.
ummm...wow...works with both the Epson and the Samsung! Yes, that is right, both a laser and an inkjet!
I prefer the laser results. But, if you don't have a laser (and you can get one for about $70 today!) the inkjet will work! No rubbing, no alcohol, no water, no mess. The ink just sticks to the clay!
These first three are laser copies. The copies have been sitting around 8-10 months. Not fresh. Transferred fine. I coated them with several layers of liquid Kato to get rid of the fuzzies.

These last two are the copies printed onto baking parchment. Not coated. As a matter of fact, they are still warm from the oven!

Doing the happy dance. No more rubbing, peeling and hoping!
